In a small town, about ten days walk north of London; a problem was arising as a threat to all Knights. One man was the cause of many accidents and a lot of trouble for the Knighthood. It cost another man his life by trying to put a stop to the problems.
This man's brother swore revenge on the one who killed his sibling; however, he was only ten years old. He still had to train to become a knight. By the laws of the Knighthood, a boy must be of an age to understand the rules of this dangerous activity. For all the glory most Knights are portrayed in, it is extremely demanding on the physical body. Therefore, it took many long talks with his father before he could even think about becoming a knight.
All the other boys wanting to join had to be a squire to a Lord; therefore, Damien felt he must do the same. It wasn't in the same way as the others. He was a squire to the one who trained him to become a knight. This taught Damien a different kind of discipline. How to be polite when being ridiculed, how to control his moods in many situations, (especially when ladies were present). Learning this helped him to concentrate on his techniques in sword play.
Being a squire, also, meant he had to attend Grand Balls and dinner parties. Damien looked forward to these because he got to meet different people and to listen to gossip. He might find out something useful about the slime bag that killed his brother. This took a few years, but he learned the guy was going from town to town committing similar crimes.
A trail was left to follow.
